Ah, the festive season! There’s nothing quite like the magic of Christmas, and for me, no holiday season is complete without a visit to Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market. It’s not just any market, it’s a firm fixture in the city’s holiday celebrations and a massive favourite of mine. This year marks its 24th year, and it’s better than ever. If you haven’t been before, let me guide you through why this market is the best Christmas market in the UK.

The Heart of Birmingham City Centre
Located in the heart of Birmingham city centre, the market stretches from Victoria Square to Centenary Square, with additional festivities in Cathedral Square. It’s a great place to soak in the holiday vibes, whether it’s your first time or you’re a seasoned visitor.
Birmingham City Council and the event organisers have truly outdone themselves this year, offering something for everyone. From light displays that dazzle after dark to a large range of traditional goods, the market embodies the essence of Christmas.
Beyond the shopping and entertainment, the decorations throughout the city add a magical touch. The streets sparkle with fairy lights, and the festive atmosphere fills every corner of Birmingham. The market’s central location makes it easy to access other iconic city landmarks, including the nearby Birmingham Cathedral.
Authentic German Charm
Did you know that Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market is the largest authentic German Christmas market outside of Germany and Austria? It’s no wonder it draws thousands of visitors every year. With traditional wooden stalls offering sweet treats, traditional toys, and handmade crafts, it’s a treasure trove of festive delights.
Stop by the food vendors to taste the magic of wheat beer, tasty hot chocolate, pretzels, crepes, and other festive treats. Don’t miss the mulled wine, it’s the perfect way to warm up on a chilly winter evening. Your taste buds will thank you!

Fancy something different? Try the bratwursts sizzling on the grill or the delicious roasted almonds. The food options are endless, and each bite feels like a warm hug from Germany itself. The attention to detail in recreating the traditional German experience is truly remarkable.
Live Entertainment & Festive Fun
One of the highlights of the market is the live entertainment. From live music performances to roaming choirs spreading Christmas cheer, there’s always something happening. The Christmas Village Festival atmosphere is truly infectious, with every corner buzzing with holiday joy.

Don’t forget to check out the ice rink and the big wheel at Centenary Square. Whether you’re a pro skater or a first-timer, the ice rink is a fun way to make memories. And the big wheel? Oh my goodness, the views of the city from up there are simply stunning. Imagine the twinkling lights of the market and the city skyline, it’s a sight to behold.
If you’re visiting with kids, the market has plenty to keep them entertained. From funfair rides to sweet treats like marshmallows and candy floss, the little ones will be just as enchanted by the experience as the adults.
Christmas Shopping & Local Artists
If you’re looking for unique gifts, you’re in the right place. The market is a haven for Christmas shopping, with a vendor list that includes local artists and craftspeople. You’ll find everything from handmade ornaments to bespoke jewellery, perfect for ticking items off your gift list.
Don’t miss the chance to explore the Christmas menus offered by various vendors. From hearty sausages to delicious pastries, there’s something for everyone. It’s also a great way to support small businesses and local talent during the holiday season.
Take some time to browse the stalls selling traditional toys, handcrafted decorations, and intricate wooden carvings. These one-of-a-kind treasures make thoughtful gifts and memorable keepsakes of your visit.
When & Where
This year, the market opened on Friday, 1st November, and runs until Tuesday, 24th December. The stalls are open daily, so you’ve got plenty of time to visit and revisit! If you’re driving, the New Street car parks are convenient, but I recommend using public transport to avoid the hassle.
If you’re in town for Remembrance Sunday, the market respectfully pauses its entertainment, ensuring the occasion is marked appropriately. This thoughtful gesture highlights how deeply the event organisers value tradition and community.
For those staying longer in Birmingham, the city has much more to offer during the festive season. From the nearby Bullring for more Christmas shopping to seasonal events at local theatres, Birmingham truly comes alive in December.
