Lisbon is the kind of city that leaves you wanting more. With its rich history, breathtaking views, and delicious food, two days in Lisbon feels like a whirlwind. We had 2 days in Lisbon as part of our cruise, and while it was absolutely incredible, I’ll admit, I don’t think two days is enough to do this beautiful city justice.
From hopping on the famous hop-on-hop-off bus to indulging in pastéis de nata, exploring historic buildings, and wondering around at the oceanario Lisboa aquarium, our brief stay was jam-packed with highlights. If you’re planning your own 2-day Lisbon itinerary, here’s everything you need to know to make the most of your time.
Day 1: Exploring Lisbon’s Historic Charm
Start with a Hop-On-Hop-Off Bus Tour
When we first got off the ship, we went straight to the hop-on-hop-off bus for a quick overview of the city. This is hands-down the best way to get your bearings and see Lisbon’s top attractions without feeling overwhelmed.
As we cruised through the Baixa district and along Avenida da Liberdade, I was blown away by Lisbon’s beauty. The high town is full of designer shops like Louis Vuitton, and the streets are lined with beautiful trees with purple leaves, a picture-perfect sight.
Stop at a Local Market for Street Food
One of our stops was at a very colourful market with lots of street food options. I couldn’t resist trying an amazing burrito, which was bursting with flavour and absolutely delicious. Of course, I had to pair it with a cocktail because, well, why not?
This market had such a lively atmosphere, and it was the perfect place to relax before hopping back on the bus.
Visit the Monument to King José I and Arco da Rua Augusta
After the bus tour, we walked over to see the Monument to King José I, located in the heart of the city center at Praça do Comércio. This square is stunning, surrounded by colourful buildings and the iconic Arco da Rua Augusta, which serves as a gateway to the busty streets of the Baixa district.
The cobbled streets gave me such a nostalgic feeling, it was like stepping into a scene from An Idiot Abroad! (LOL) The vibe here is both historic and lively, making it an absolute must-see on any Lisbon itinerary.
Experience Lisbon’s Nightlife
After dinner on the ship, we enjoyed the live music and entertainment at the port. Watching the performances from the ship’s deck with Lisbon’s lights sparkling in the background was magical. The atmosphere at night is something else. Lisbon truly comes alive after sunset!
Day 2: Immersing in Lisbon’s Culture and Modern Wonders
Morning Stop at the Fancy McDonald’s
Yes, you read that right, McDonald’s! But this isn’t your ordinary fast-food restaurant. This McDonald’s in Lisbon was the fanciest one I’ve ever seen. Before heading to the Oceanario Lisboa Aquarium, we stopped here, and I treated myself to a Portuguese egg custard tart (or pastel de nata). Oh my goodness, it was heavenly!
Visit Oceanario Lisboa Aquarium
The Oceanario Lisboa Aquarium is the largest aquarium I’ve ever visited, and it was absolutely mind-blowing. From the massive tanks with mesmerising marine life to the calming atmosphere of the big video screens, it was a highlight of our trip.
At the end of the tour, there’s a space where everyone lies down to watch the marine life on a huge overhead screen. It was so peaceful, just wow. The kids loved it, and I felt completely relaxed.
Take a Ride on the Skyline
Before heading to lunch, we hopped on the Skyline cable car, which offers incredible views of Lisbon and the Tagus River. The ride was short but unforgettable, giving us a unique perspective of the Portuguese capital.
Lunch at Honest Greens
For lunch, we visited Honest Greens, a fresh and modern restaurant that I absolutely adored. I opted for the Tataki de Atum com Aji Amarelo, a dish featuring wild white tuna. It was so flavourful, I demolished it in no time!
To wash it down, I chose a cold-pressed drink called “Happiness,” made with turmeric, ginger, lemon, and apple. It was refreshing and the perfect pick-me-up for our busy day.
Visit the Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower
In the late afternoon, we explored the Belém district, home to two of Lisbon’s most iconic landmarks: the Jerónimos Monastery and the Belém Tower.
The Jerónimos Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a masterpiece of Manueline architecture. Its intricate details and rich history make it an absolute must-see.
A short walk away is the Belém Tower, another UNESCO World Heritage Site that once guarded the city from invaders. The views of the Tagus River from here are breathtaking.
End Your Day at Miradouro de Santa Luzia
As the day wound down, we made our way to the Miradouro de Santa Luzia, one of Lisbon’s best viewpoints. Overlooking the Alfama district and the river, this spot is a photographer’s dream. The panoramic views were the perfect way to end our adventure.
Tips for 2 Days in Lisbon
1. Use the Hop-On-Hop-Off Bus
The easiest way to see Lisbon’s main attractions is by using the hop-on-hop-off bus. It saves time, especially if you’re only in the city for a short visit.
2. Wear Comfortable Shoes
Lisbon is known for its steep hills and cobbled streets, so comfy footwear is a must.
3. Try Pastéis de Nata
No trip to Lisbon is complete without trying the famous pastéis de nata. For the best experience, head to Pastéis de Belém, where they’ve been making these custard tarts since 1837.
4. Consider a Lisbon Card
If you’re planning to visit several attractions, the Lisbon Card is a great option. It offers free entry to many sites, including the Jerónimos Monastery, and unlimited use of public transportation.
5. Plan for Long Lines
Popular attractions like the Santa Justa Lift and Belém Tower can have long lines, especially during peak season. Arrive early or book tickets in advance to save time.
Final Thoughts: Is 2 Days Enough in Lisbon?
So, is 2 days in Lisbon enough? While we had a great time, I’ll be honest, 2 days is a tease! This Portuguese capital is packed with so much to see and do, from the historic Castelo de São Jorge to the trendy LX Factory and everything in between.
That said, if you’re short on time, 2 days is enough to experience the highlights and fall in love with Lisbon’s charm. Whether you’re wandering the narrow streets of the Alfama district, savouring a custard tart, or enjoying the incredible views from a viewing platform, Lisbon will steal your heart.
Would I go back? In a heartbeat! Next time, I’m staying longer to soak in every little bit of this amazing place. If Lisbon is on your travel list, pack your sense of adventure and get ready for a trip you’ll never forget!
